About this guide

Pennsylvania Unemployment is an independent guide to unemployment compensation (UC) in Pennsylvania. It is not the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry (L&I), and nothing here is an official notice from a government agency.

What the guide covers

Each guide takes one question a claimant asks and answers it for Pennsylvania: how to file a UC claim, who qualifies, how L&I sets a weekly benefit rate, how long a claim lasts, what to file each week, what the work search asks of you, how to appeal a determination or handle an overpayment, how benefits are taxed, which phone line or office to use, and where disability benefits and job search help come from.

How the guide is kept

Every figure, deadline, and phone number in these guides, and every link to a government page, is checked against the official page it comes from: L&I's UC pages, the Pennsylvania UC Law, the rate table in the Pennsylvania Bulletin, and the state and federal pages behind the rest. Each guide lists the pages it rests on under Official sources, with the date they were last checked.

What the guide cannot do

• It cannot see or change your claim. Sign in to your UC dashboard on L&I's UC benefits site, or see which number to call for L&I's own phone lines, its address for secure messages, and its chatbot.
• It cannot decide whether you qualify. The UC Service Center issues that determination once you file, and you have a legal right to appeal it. Denials, appeals, and overpayments explains the deadline and the hearing.
• It cannot give legal advice or represent you at a hearing. For that, L&I points claimants to legal aid, bar associations, and law schools, where free legal help may be available.
